| Volume 9 of 7 Seeds |
In the present day, before the start of 7 Seeds, when astronomers predict that Earth will be hit by a meteorite, the world leaders met to develop a plan for human survival, called the Seven Seeds project. Each country would cryonically preserve a number of healthy young people, which would allow them to survive devastation of the impact. After a computer determines that Earth is once again safe for human life, it would revive each group. As much as I'd like to write something ala manga critic, I won't since I suck with words. And I'm too full to write so I'll just give you a review that best explained my thoughts from the 7 Seeds Baka Updates page:
The Japanese government created five groups of survivors named Winter, Spring, Summer A, Summer B, and Fall. Each group consisted of seven members, who were not told what would happen before being put in cryonic preservation, and one adult guide who is trained in wilderness survival. These groups were scattered across Japan: the Summer groups in southern and northern Kyūshū, Fall in western Honshū, Spring in central Honshū near Tokyo, and Winter in Hokkaidō.
Every member of a group has a name containing a kigo (poetic seasonal word) related to the group name—for example, all of the members of the Spring group have names traditionally associated with spring. Each group consists of seven members plus a guide trained in wilderness survival.
I couldn't stress more on the outstanding characterizations. I'll try to make this entry spoiler-free so I'll just say this: Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE grew on me. And you can see how differently the characters perceived each other in a realistic way. As for the plot twists, there have been countless times when I just screamed/muttered "OHSNAP!" or "AHA!"in the middle of the night. The downsides: some fluff and mary sues but I tend to ignore them. This is an amazing story not in just its interesting plot and plot twists, but also its outstanding characterizations. At first they seem unlikable and their disputes rather irritating, but at the same time the conflicts between the characters is what makes them extremely realistic. Like meeting someone new, the characters really grow on you with time as their true natures flesh out. No one is 'good' or 'evil' and no two characters have the same goal.
The actions taken by the government and government officials is also quite interesting, and slowly the last days of mankind are unraveled and the nAs for the ploew world shown for what it truly is. Make sure to give yourself a long night to read this one because once you start, you won't stop.
Unfortunately, the story is still ongoing so we'd have to wait for updates again. If this manga's going to be licensed, I'd buy all the volumes in a whim. I couldn't believe that this title has been rotting in my to-read list for a long time! Although I don't remember clearly, I think I bumped into this when I was searching for award-winning manga. Or when I was searching for something with the horror genre. Horror is so not me but I wanted to give it a try. But whatever, I'm glad I get to read this amazing thing anyway. The art is good too! It really improved as the story progressed. It's somewhat classic for my liking at first, but that's just my opinion.
I guess this is why I admire mangakas so much. The way they can think of amazing plots and convey it through beautiful illustrations. Don't get me wrong, I admire book authors too (although I don't read much books). And not all mangakas do a great job either (plot-wise). Or maybe it's because they're Japanese haha! Because from what I've observed, they really do a great job in making up mind-fucking plots and executing them.
Sooo.. to finish this entry, here's a screencap of one of my favorite scenes.
Unfortunately, I can't discuss stuff like these to my friends since they aren't too fond of manga. :< I'd appreciate it if someone will recommend me a novel similar to this though.
SO WHAT ARE WAITING FOR?! READ IT! NOW NOW NOW! And let's hope for a good ending.
Btw, I read manga using Manga Rock 2. Unlocked (for $0.99 because of the first 3 day launch sale) yes for offline reading. Plugging because I love this app.
PS. CURRENTLY LISTENING.
